Taxonomic History / Nomenclature
Originally described by Fischer (1963) in the genus Austroopius, which Wharton (1987) included as a subgenus of Psyttalia. The combination Psyttalia muesebecki (Fischer) first appeared in Wharton (1997).

The original description of this species was based on specimens reared from Bactrocera psidii (Froggatt) infesting guavas (Psidium). Aside from the nomenclatural changes noted above, no additional information has been published on this species as of 2005 (Carmichael et al. 2005).
